I, too, could not put the book down. The calm wisdom, the willingness to go deeper and challenge himself to a raw honesty, the ability to speak with hope, and not with bile and bitterness, make Mr. Thompson's story a must read for all of us who are (or should be) concerned about the continuing racism that pervades our everyday thinking. It is not okay for any group of people to have to always feel like 'the only one in the room.'A child of the 60's and 70's, I grew up just about the same time as Milt. I remember wondering why I had never 'heard' about the migration from the Jim Crow life in the South and was fascinated by the book written by Pulitzer Prize author, Isabel Wilkerson - The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration. This added a better understanding of the Thompson family's experience of leaving Mississippi and moving to Wisconsin. The Only One in the Room gives one man's personal story, which is a part of that bigger story.
This is a good book, easy to read, with clear and level thinking. It offers a challenge to reflect and then act on how we intend to move forward, how we intend to live with each other and for each other.

The Only One In The Room A Lifetime of Observations on Race Milton Thompson 9781629985404 Books Reviews
Great book in a story format about Milton Thompson's life. I still have one image in my mind of Milton coming out of the wrong bathroom in the south and could feel his father's panic. No one should have to live like this!
The book is a very good story of his family's life, hardship, love, faith and success. Great read!
I loved this book and could not put it down! Mostly because the author is so truthful about his feelings regarding his faith, race, family, and career choices. His perspective comes across as a sincere attempt to seek change in a peaceful manner.
Thompson's story is more than the rehashing of past hurts; it is one that gives his readers a look into a soul that is seeking to make sense of the world in light of its "fallenness." Race may be the subject and vehicle of his struggle, but meaningful relationship both with humanity and the Divine is the path he is committed to.
I met Milt and Peggy Thompson when our boys went to school together. I applaud Milt for his candor and insights into race. His thoughts and feelings shed light on something I had no other way of knowing. Thank you Milt.
Exceptional book with insightful candor that could only come from someone with deep personal experience. Mr. Thompson has brought to light and clearly explained hidden prejudices and circumstances that are still in evidence throughout our country today. His well considered treatment of the thorny issues of Race relations in the USA and strong Christian perspective are refreshing as they blend together to be a "must read" for anyone who wants to make a difference.
I read this book in one sitting. The stories griped me, and I felt like I was walking through a lot of these stories right along side Milton Thompson. It really helped me to consider race relations in our nations past, what are those implications for us today, as well as the current state of race relations.
Sometimes God puts someone in the right place at the right time. Milt is one such man.
Milt's own story is a wonderful and timely vehicle to present for consideration potentially difficult things that, well need to be heard, considered and hopefully spur compassionate discussion within our communities. What I appreciate most is how readable, personal and human Milt's story is. Rather than preaching, instructing or debating, the backdrop of Milt's personal journey and those close to him conveys the nuance, perceptions and misperceptions in a style that allows the reader hear, connect and better understand the challenge race still presents in contemporary American society.
It is not okay for any group of people to have to always feel like 'the only one in the room.'
